Silver Creek man hit by bus

SILVER CREEK – A 50-year-old Silver Creek man who was attempting to flag down a Coach USA bus at noon today was struck by the rear tires of the bus and injured.

Robert T. Stankowitz, of Tew Street, was attempting to get the driver to stop the bus near the intersection of Howard Street and Route 5 when he fell and was struck by the bus, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s deputies said.

Witnesses at the scene were able to alert the driver to stop the bus. The Silver Creek Emergency Squad helped to release the man from under the bus.

Stankowitz was transported to Erie County Medical Center via Starflight helicopter. He was listed in stable condition this afternoon.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Silver Creek and Sunset Bay fire departments.

Traffic in the area was interrupted for about an hour while emergency crews and Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies investigated the incident.
