LOCKPORT – Alexander S. Wisby, whose attorney said he was a drug addict, was sentenced Wednesday to one to three years in prison for stealing $3,742 worth of property from a Town of Lockport bed-and-breakfast last year before it had opened for business.

Wisby, 24, of Mechanic Street, Middleport, had pleaded guilty before Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas to a reduced charge of attempted third-degree grand larceny. The house on Lake Avenue, owned by Colleen Graff, had been approved as the town’s first B&B. Assistant District Attorney Theresa L. Prezioso said the theft put those plans on hold.

Wisby will have to pay restitution after he gets out of prison, Farkas ordered. Assistant Public Defender Michael H. White said he’s known Wisby since the defendant was nine years old. “I know he’s an addict,” White said.

Farkas quoted Wisby as telling a probation officer, “I would like probation because if I go upstate, I’ll just start using heroin again.”

Farkas said there are antidrug programs in prison and told Wisby, “If you approach it with the attitude that nothing’s going to help, guess what? Nothing’s going to help.”
