A distraught 43-year-old Albion man reportedly armed with a handgun prompted the brief lockdown of Albion High School this afternoon before he peacefully surrendered to Albion police about 2:15 p.m.

The man, whose identity has not been released by police, was taken to Medina Memorial Hospital for evaluation after his surrender.

Albion Police Chief Roland D. Nenni III said officers were dispatched to the Crimson Heights Apartment complete on Crimson Drive about 1:25 p.m. after being notified of a suicidal person armed with a firearm there. By the time officers arrived the man had gone but officers were told he had called the Albion High School asking to speak to one of his children reportedly a student there.

As a precaution Albion Central School District officials were notified and police officers were sent to the high school campus and stationed at all entrances to the school as a precaution and the school was briefly placed in lockdown until the man surrendered, the police chief said.

Chief Nenni stressed that the distraught man made no attempt to get to the high school and he was not near the school when he was taken into custody.
